House of Representatives starts the Impeachment process of President Trump: Round 2

With less than two weeks left to his presidential term, President Trump is the only president in history to face two impeachment attempts.

Today the House of Representatives issued a single charge of impeachment against President Trump.

Under the grounds laid out in the 14th Amendment, the impeachment charge accuses Trump of "willfully inciting violence" through "insurrection or rebellion" against the democratic government of United States of America.

Prior to the impeachment charge issuance, Donald Trump

  1. Led a monthslong misinformation campaign to baselessly discredit the results of the 2020 election — which ultimately led to the lethal January 6th attack and attempted insurrection on the nation's capitol carried out by his followers.

  2. Trump had encouraged those at the "March for Trump" protest to march to the Capitol, prior to the attack. In the impeachment charge, its specifically states that "He also willfully made statements that encouraged — and foreseeably resulted in — imminent lawless action at the Capitol,"

  3. Two hours into the siege, Trump urged his supporters "to go home," adding: "We love you. You're very special. ... I know how you feel. But go home, and go home in peace."

Democrats are expected to vote on the resolution sometime midweek, unless Vice President Pence invokes the 25th Amendment to remove Trump first. If passed, the resolution would be the second time the House has voted to impeach Trump.
